Discovering the Vibrant World of Sue Kreitzman: A Visit to Her East London Studio for "Voices of East London”

Visiting Sue Kreitzman's studio home in East London was a key part of my project for Value Retail’s pop-up store “Voices of East London.” Sue is one of the artists we plan to feature, and my visit to her studio was an unforgettable highlight. Her studio, located in the heart of East London, is a dazzling explosion of color and creativity. The day I visited, Sue welcomed me with open arms, and her enthusiasm was infectious. The walls were adorned with her vibrant paintings and intricate assemblages, each piece telling a story and showcasing her unique artistic voice.

Sue’s work transcends traditional boundaries of art, design, and culture. Her creations are a testament to the power of self-expression and the beauty of the unconventional. She combines found objects with bold colors and patterns, creating pieces that are both whimsical and profound. Her studio is a living gallery, where every corner reveals a new and fascinating aspect of her artistic journey.

Sue Kreitzman’s life is as colorful and eclectic as her art. Born in the United States, she enjoyed a successful career as a food writer, authoring numerous cookbooks and appearing as a television presenter. However, her artistic career began later in life, after she moved to London. In the early 2000s, Sue underwent a dramatic shift from the culinary arts to visual arts, driven by an irrepressible urge to create.

One interesting fact about Sue is that she discovered her artistic calling almost by accident. While working on a book project, she began experimenting with crayons and paints, which quickly evolved into a passionate pursuit of art. This late blooming into the art world has given her a distinctive perspective that resonates deeply with the themes of reinvention and creativity in “Voices of East London.”

As Sue guided me through her space, she shared the inspirations behind her work and the significance of each creation. She draws inspiration from a wide array of sources, including folk art, outsider art, and the vibrant cultural tapestry of East London. Her pieces often feature strong female figures, mystical symbols, and a joyful explosion of colors.

The experience was both enlightening and inspiring, providing a deep insight into her world and artistic process. It was clear that Sue's work is a perfect fit for “Voices of East London,” capturing the eclectic and dynamic spirit of the area. This visit not only enriched my project but also left me with a profound appreciation for Sue's artistry and the cultural richness of East London.

Sue Kreitzman is a living example of how it’s never too late to follow your passion and reinvent yourself. Her story and her art are testaments to the transformative power of creativity, making her an invaluable addition to “Voices of East London.”
