Brilliant Broom, London Design Week
During London Design Week in May 2016, British designer Lee Broom unveiled a breathtaking installation titled "Salone del Automobile," captivating the design community and visitors alike. Set in Broom's Shoreditch showroom, the exhibition was a conceptual automotive showroom inspired by 1960s opulence and futuristic aesthetics. It was a homage to the golden era of luxury automobiles, specifically the glamour and craftsmanship of 1960s car design. This installation showcased Broom's ability to blend the past with the future, creating a unique and immersive experience for visitors.
Upon entering the showroom, I was immediately transported to a space that felt like a high-end car showroom from a bygone era. The exhibition featured a series of new lighting pieces, each meticulously designed to echo elements of automotive design. The showroom was filled with mirrors, chrome accents, and sleek lines, all contributing to the overall sense of luxury and sophistication. One of the standout pieces was the "Optical" lighting series, designed with a nod to the intricate detailing and precision engineering found in classic cars, while the "Fulcrum" series included minimalist, cylindrical shapes and polished finishes reminiscent of car exhausts and mechanical components.
The ambiance of the installation was carefully curated to evoke a sense of nostalgia and wonder. The space was dimly lit, with spotlights highlighting the key pieces, creating dramatic shadows and reflections. This lighting design not only showcased the beauty of the pieces but also added to the overall immersive experience. As I moved through the showroom, I could interact with the pieces, getting up close to appreciate the craftsmanship and detail that went into each design. The combination of tactile engagement and visual spectacle made "Salone del Automobile" a memorable and engaging exhibition.
"Salone del Automobile" received widespread acclaim from both the design community and the public. Critics praised Broom for his visionary approach and ability to create a narrative through design. The installation was not just a display of products but a story that took visitors on a journey through time and imagination. This exhibition solidified Lee Broom's reputation as one of the leading figures in contemporary design, demonstrating his talent for blending different design elements and eras to create something entirely new and captivating. It was a testament to his creativity and ability to transform ordinary spaces into extraordinary experiences, leaving a lasting impression on all who visited.
