Discovering the Magic of Luis Barragán’s Houses in Mexico City

It was a sunny afternoon in May 2022 when I set out to explore the enchanting world of Luis Barragán, the legendary architect whose colorful creations have left an indelible mark on Mexico City. With a sense of adventure and a curiosity for the whimsical, I began my journey at the Luis Barragán House, a masterpiece of design that is anything but ordinary.

Barragán’s house, located in the Tacubaya neighborhood, is a vibrant explosion of color and light. The first thing that strikes you is the use of bold, unexpected hues—pink, yellow, and purple—transforming the concrete walls into a canvas of joy. As I wandered through the sunlit rooms, I couldn’t help but notice the pigeons fluttering around the courtyard, their presence adding a touch of everyday magic. It turns out, these pigeons were a particular favorite of Barragán, who believed they brought life and movement to his otherwise still and serene spaces.

The next stop on my architectural adventure was the Gilardi House, a striking testament to Barragán’s innovative use of space and color. Designed in 1976, this house features an indoor pool that seems to merge seamlessly with a hot pink wall, creating a surreal and inviting atmosphere. Walking through the Gilardi House is like stepping into a living artwork, where geometric shapes and primary colors create a playful yet calming environment. The pigeons here, too, seemed to feel right at home, occasionally perching on windowsills as if to admire Barragán’s handiwork.

But the highlight of my journey was undoubtedly the house Barragán designed for the Gilardi family. This residence is a true testament to Barragán’s genius, with secret nooks, vibrant doors, and hidden courtyards that invite exploration and imagination. The dining room, with its massive wooden table and skylight, is a space where the family gathers for meals and laughter, bathed in the glow of natural light. As I sat there, imagining the lively dinners and joyful conversations that must take place, a pigeon peeked through the window, as if to remind me of Barragán’s enduring connection to these simple yet poetic creatures.

In the end, what makes Luis Barragán’s work so captivating is his ability to blend the practical with the fantastical. His houses are not just buildings; they are living, breathing spaces that inspire dreams and playfulness. Even today, in May 2022, his influence is everywhere, encouraging us to think creatively and embrace the beauty of our surroundings. So if you ever find yourself in Mexico City, take the time to explore the world of Luis Barragán. You might just find yourself smiling, dreaming, and seeing your own home in a whole new light, with perhaps a few pigeons to keep you company along the way. Cheers to the magic of Mexico City and the timeless genius of Luis Barragán!
